The statute calls the same thing a trademark. There is no substantive difference: the brand is the name, logo or symbol that distinguishes your product; the trademark is what that becomes once it is registered and owned. The only practical difference is registration. An unregistered brand is a name you use, and one somebody else may also use. A registered trademark is a right you can assert before the authorities, at customs and in court. So we always start from the same question: is the name you built your reputation on actually yours? ## How trademark registration works in Qatar The statutory path is the same for every application. The decisions inside it are what tip acceptance against refusal: 1. **Availability search** — We search the register for identical and confusingly similar marks that could block you, and assess the risk before a single fee is spent. 2. **Classification** — We identify the classes that actually cover your business — no more, which costs money for nothing, and no fewer, which leaves a gap someone else can walk through. 3. **Filing** — We prepare the application and its supporting documents and lodge it with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, correctly classified and in proper form. 4. **Examination** — If objections are raised, we prepare the response and follow it through to resolution. 5. **Publication and opposition** — The mark is published and a 60-day window opens in which third parties may oppose. We defend the application if that happens. 6. **Certificate and renewal** — We collect the certificate and docket your renewal dates, so protection is never lost to a missed deadline. ## What can be registered A trademark protects what identifies the source of a product or service: the trade name, the logo, a symbol, the styled form of a name, distinctive packaging, and combinations of words, letters and numerals. Purely descriptive names — those that name the product rather than distinguish it — are hard to register, because granting one to a single owner takes a word the whole market needs. That is one of the most important things we assess at the search stage: is the name registrable at all, and if not, what alternative keeps your identity and still clears examination? ## Term and renewal Registration runs for ten years from the filing date and is renewable with no cap on the number of renewals. A mark that is managed properly can stay yours indefinitely. A mark whose renewal is forgotten can be lost outright. We docket every date: renewals, assignment recordals, changes of name and address. Disciplined maintenance costs far less than re-filing after a lapse — and sometimes re-filing is not available, because somebody else registered the name in the meantime. ## First to file, not first to use Trademarks in Qatar go to whoever files first. There is no grace period and no priority for having used a name for years without registering it. Whoever filed before you holds the right, even if you are the one who built the market for the name. That is the single most common late case we see: an established business, a known name, never registered — until somebody else registers it. Filing early is not a formality. It is a competitive decision. ## GCC and international filing If your business runs beyond Qatar, protection has to run with it. The GCC Trademark Law took effect on 10 August 2023, and the Madrid Protocol entered into force for Qatar on 3 August 2024, making it the 115th member of the Madrid Union. We coordinate national filings across all six GCC states and the wider Arab region, designate Qatar through the Madrid System for foreign owners, and file outbound international applications for Qatari ones. "Brand" is the everyday word; "trademark" is the statutory term for the same right once it is registered with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The procedure and the protection are identical. ### Can I register my own trademark without an agent? Filing is a statutory procedure and mistakes in it are expensive: incomplete classification leaves a gap in your protection, a descriptive name is refused after the fees are spent, and an examination objection without a proper response can end the application. We handle it and set out the risk before filing, not after. ### Does registering in Qatar protect my mark across the GCC? A national registration in Qatar protects your mark in Qatar. Protection in another state requires a filing that covers it — either nationally there or through the Madrid System. We coordinate either route. ### What happens if somebody opposes my mark?
