# Patent registration in Qatar

> Patent filing in Qatar under Law No. 30 of 2006: national applications and PCT national-phase entry, a twenty-year term, and annuity management that keeps protection in force.

We draft and file patent applications in Qatar under Law No. 30 of 2006, enter the PCT national phase, and manage the annuities that keep protection continuously in force.

## At a glance

- **Term:** 20 years
- **Statute:** Law No. 30 of 2006
- **Priority rule:** First to file
- **International route:** PCT national phase

## What a patent protects

A patent protects a new technical solution to a practical problem — a product or a process. It gives its owner an exclusive right for twenty years, during which nobody may exploit the invention without permission.

Unlike a trademark, which renews indefinitely, a patent is temporary by design: protection in exchange for disclosure. You publish what you invented, and in return you get twenty years of exclusivity, after which the invention is available to everyone.

## Confidentiality before filing

What loses patents most often is not refusal on the merits. It is early disclosure. A trade-show demonstration, a post on the company account, a paper published before filing — any of these can destroy novelty and cost you the right to your own invention.

The practical rule is simple: file before you disclose. If disclosure has already happened, tell us exactly when and what was said before any other step. The assessment changes fundamentally depending on what was published and when.

## National filing and the national phase

There are two routes to protection in Qatar. The first is a direct national application with the competent authority. The second is entering the national phase of an international application filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty — the usual route for a foreign owner protecting an invention in several countries at once.

We act as your agent on both: drafting claims and specification, handling priority documents, prosecuting the application, and responding to what examination requires.

## Annuities: where patents are actually lost

A patent is not a document to frame. It is a right whose annual fees must be paid to stay in force. One missed date can end twenty years of protection and years of development spend.

We docket and track every date the same way we track trademark renewals: advance reminders, payment within the deadline, and a clear record of what is in force and what is coming due.

## Patents across the region

Qatar has been a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization since 1976, and its industrial-property framework is being rebuilt quickly. We coordinate filings across the GCC and the Arab region according to the markets you actually operate in, not a generic list.

We are as clear about what we do not promise as about what we do. Each state has its own procedure and its own authority, and we set out the realistic position for each market before you spend on it.

## Common questions

### How long does patent protection last in Qatar?

Twenty years under Law No. 30 of 2006, conditional on annuities being paid on time. Unlike a trademark, a patent cannot be renewed once its term ends.

### Can I still patent an invention I have already announced?

Disclosure before filing can destroy novelty. The answer depends on exactly what was published, when, and to whom — so tell us in detail before you file or disclose anything further.

### Is there a single GCC patent that covers every state?

We will not promise you that. Protection is sought in each territory according to its own procedure, and we set out the route actually available for each market you are targeting rather than offering one answer that covers all of them.
