# Copyright protection in Qatar

> Copyright in Qatar under Law No. 7 of 2002: ownership, licensing and neighbouring rights, plus the voluntary registration that gives your works and software evidentiary weight.

Protection arises the moment a work is created, not the moment it is registered. We establish who owns what, draft the licences, and handle the voluntary registration that gives your literary, artistic and software works evidentiary weight.

## At a glance

- **Statute:** Law No. 7 of 2002
- **Term:** Life + 50 years
- **Right arises:** On creation
- **Registration:** Voluntary

## A right that needs no formality

Copyright does not depend on registration. Once a work exists in tangible form — text, a design, source code, a recording — the right exists for its author. This is misunderstood in both directions: business owners who think they own nothing because they never registered, and others who use somebody else’s work because it is "unregistered".

Protection under Law No. 7 of 2002 runs for the author’s life plus fifty years. Registration is voluntary, and its function is evidentiary — which matters enormously the day somebody disputes your ownership.

## Who owns what somebody made for you

Most copyright work we are called in for is not a dispute with a stranger. It is an internal ownership question: the logo a freelancer designed, the app a development firm wrote, the photographs a photographer shot for your campaign, the content an agency produced.

In those cases ownership is not obvious. Without a written transfer, the right can remain with whoever created the work rather than whoever paid for it. We review your contracts, establish what you actually own, and prepare the assignments and licences that fix it — before it becomes a problem in a financing, a sale or a dispute.

## Software and digital works

Source code is a protected work, and so are its interfaces, documentation and content. That is the primary basis for protecting a digital product in Qatar, alongside the trademark that protects its name and identity.

We set out where copyright stops — the idea itself is not protected, only its expression — and layer protection accordingly: copyright for code and content, a trademark for the name and logo, and an industrial design for the product’s appearance where that applies.

## Neighbouring rights and licensing

Alongside copyright, the law protects neighbouring rights: those of performers, producers of sound recordings and broadcasting organisations. These are independent of the author’s right in the underlying work, and they are frequently forgotten in licensing — which is how infringement happens.

We draft use, publication and distribution licences, record assignments, and make every agreement explicit about what is actually licensed: which right, for how long, in which territory, on which medium.

## Common questions

### Do I have to register copyright in Qatar for it to be protected?

No. Protection arises on creation under Law No. 7 of 2002. Registration is voluntary and its value is evidentiary if ownership is ever disputed.

### Who owns the logo a freelance designer made for me?

Payment alone does not transfer rights. Without a written transfer, the right can remain with the designer. We review the arrangement and prepare the assignment that moves ownership to you expressly.

### Does copyright protect my company name?

Usually not. Short names and titles are protected through trademark law, not copyright. The two work together: the trademark for the name and logo, copyright for the content, design and code.
